SmartXSP or Google Ads
What you gain by switching platforms.

The Google Ads Display Network covers the basics. SmartXSP opens up the targeting, inventory, formats and data it cannot reach, at a generally lower media cost.

Google Ads is often the first platform an advertiser turns to for display campaigns. That makes sense: the interface is familiar, the account already exists, and the Display Network covers a very large share of the web.

SmartXSP is the programmatic platform built by OursBlanc (Edge Query SAS). It centralises display, video, CTV, DOOH and audio buying across several DSPs (DV360, Amazon DSP, Adform, The Trade Desk, StackAdapt, Xandr) and adds eight exclusive ad formats designed to capture attention. That multi DSP architecture is what unlocks a level of targeting, control and creativity a standard Google Ads account cannot reach. You can explore the platform in detail here.

So the question is not whether Google Ads works. It is what you cannot do from Google Ads, and what that costs you in performance. Here are the concrete differences, in the order you feel them on a campaign.

1. Targeting: from the site to the page

In Google Ads you target placements and broad topics, with limited visibility on the actual context your ads run in.

On SmartXSP you combine two levels:

Site level targeting. You build your publisher list site by site, as a whitelist or a blacklist, with full transparency on where your ads actually ran.

Page level contextual targeting. The analysis looks at the content of the page being read, not just the site's declared category. A mountain gear brand can appear on the ski touring article and stay off the politics page of the very same publisher.

The two intersect. That combination is what makes the difference on demanding brand campaigns.

2. Brand safety: beyond a single checkbox

Google Ads offers a handful of generic content exclusions. SmartXSP lets you steer every sensitive category individually: conflict and distressing news, violence, adult content, alcohol, gambling, disasters, divisive speech, misinformation.

You set the tolerance threshold per category and per campaign, rather than once and for all at account level. You then get the delivery detail back, so you can verify the rule was applied and adjust.

3. Geolocation: from the region to the store

Google Ads targets administrative areas: country, region, county, city, and a radius around a point.

SmartXSP adds geofencing. You draw custom zones around your own stores, around your competitors' stores, around a real catchment area, an event venue or a transport corridor. You can also target people who passed through a given zone over an earlier period, which changes the whole logic of drive to store.

For a retail network, the difference between targeting a whole city and drawing a polygon around each of your twelve stores shows up directly in the cost per visit.

4. Data: 800,000 third party segments, plus your own

In Google Ads you are limited to Google audiences: affinity segments, in market segments, demographics, and your remarketing lists.

SmartXSP gives you access to more than 800,000 third party data segments from the market's main providers, on top of Google audiences. Fine grained socio demographics, sector specific purchase intent, consumption data, automotive data, B2B data, mobility data.

Your first party data is activated in the same place: CRM files, site audiences, segments built from your product catalogue. It serves for targeting and for exclusion, and it feeds lookalike modelling. That is exactly the principle behind Product Feed, our product retargeting module, which connects your catalogue to our premium formats.

And because collection runs through our own first party tracking setup, hosted in Europe and TCF compliant, you are not dependent on a single ecosystem to rebuild your audiences.

5. Formats: breaking out of the IAB box

This is probably the most visible gap. The Google Ads Display Network mainly serves standard IAB banners and responsive ads.

SmartXSP serves those same IAB formats, but enriched: embedded video, HTML5 animation, before and after mechanics, sliders, product carousels, interactive modules. The format becomes an experience, not just a rectangle.

On top of that come our eight exclusive formats, designed to capture attention without degrading the reading experience, plus channels Google Ads simply does not offer: connected TV, video and audio, and digital out of home.

Finally, DCO can be switched on for any campaign on request. Creatives adapt automatically to the product viewed, the weather, the location, the time of day or stock levels, with no extra creative production.

6. Buying: 5 to 7% cheaper, with no minimum

On comparable inventory, our campaigns buy on average 5 to 7% cheaper than the same plan run from Google Ads. That comes from direct access to the marketplaces, from bid management by our trading desk, and from custom bidding, which continuously reallocates budget towards the placements that genuinely perform.

Then there is the pricing structure: a 15% management fee on media spend, no setup fee, no minimum spend, no minimum term. A test campaign of a few thousand euros is possible, which is not the case with most programmatic players. The detail is on our pricing page, and you can simulate a campaign online.

7. Support: a team, not a help centre

On Google Ads you are on your own in front of the interface, or looked after by someone whose objective is to grow your spend.

At OursBlanc, support is included in the 15%. We handle the technical setup on your site: tag implementation, conversion tracking configuration, retargeting setup, consent verification. Our trading desk builds the plan, launches it, optimises it and reports back, with delivery detail site by site and a measure of the attention actually generated, not just declared viewability.

You keep the decision. We carry the execution.

By the numbers

These figures do not describe a premium tier reserved for large budgets. They describe how the platform works as standard, whatever the amount invested.

No setup fee, no commitment, no entry threshold. You test, you measure, you decide.

Summary

The capabilities that make the difference on a display campaign, at a glance.

Site and page level targeting

Your publisher list and the analysis of the page's actual content intersect, instead of stopping at the site's declared topic.

Brand safety by sensitive category

Every category is steered individually, per campaign, with after the fact verification on actual delivery.

Custom geofencing

Zones drawn around your stores or your competitors' stores, not just administrative boundaries.

800,000 third party data segments

On top of Google audiences, with a wider choice of providers and far finer sector granularity.

First party data activation

Your CRM files, site audiences and catalogue data serve for targeting, exclusion and lookalike modelling.

Enriched IAB formats

Video, HTML5, before and after, slider, product carousel. The standard format becomes an experience.

DCO on request

Dynamic creatives adapted to the product, the location, the weather or the moment, on any campaign.

CTV, DOOH and audio

Connected TV, digital out of home and audio sit alongside display, in the same plan and the same reporting.

Custom bidding and transparency

Site by site reporting, automatic exclusion of underperforming placements, attention measurement rather than viewability alone.

Trading desk included

Technical setup on your site, configuration, daily management and optimisation, all included in the management fee.

5 to 7% cheaper

On comparable inventory, direct marketplace access and active bid management bring the media cost down.

No minimum, no commitment

No setup fee, no budget floor, no imposed term. You can start small.

Some of these capabilities do exist in DV360, Google's programmatic platform, but remain out of reach from a standard Google Ads account and require a dedicated budget and team.

Should you leave Google Ads?

No, and that is not our point. Search is search, and Google Ads keeps its full place on intent capture campaigns.

The question is about display. As soon as you need to build awareness, work an editorial context, address a precise catchment area or run a creative that is more than a fixed banner, the Google Ads Display Network runs into its limits fast. That is exactly where SmartXSP operates.

The simplest approach is to compare on your own numbers. Give us a share of your display budget for one month, running alongside your existing campaigns, and look at the results side by side.

Let's compare on your own campaigns.

Send us your current display plan. We will show you what the same budget delivers on SmartXSP.
